Kat is forced to break out of her self imposed solitude after her friend Patrick is beaten to death. While the local police claim outsiders were responsible, Kat knows better. She rightly suspects the attack was an backlash against Patrick's homosexuality. As Kat uncovers the events of that fateful night, she must confront even more painful trues. Lauren Myracle delves deeply into homophobia and poverty through this gripping account.

Price's opening up this avenue is truly unnerving & upsetting. The technological possibility for this a biological transfer creates considerable discussion of the ethical ramifications for such a procedure. Maggie Stiefvater, author of the Shiver series, weaves the setting of the annual Scorpio Races horse races with intense conflict-to win the racer must conquer the real possibility of death. Stiefvater brilliantly incorporates characterization to elicit strong emotional responses. Many will root for protagonists Sean and Puck to succeed in a competition with high personal stakes. Others may loathe stable owner Malvern and his son who stand in their way. Horses such as Corr and Dove also pull on the heartstrings. The tension builds as the date of the race draws near. The conclusion proves unsettling.
