Examine the Wheel of Possibilities presentation when exploring your post high school options.
The 2016-17 school year is quickly coming to an end with the summer break fast approaching. Consider these selections as engaging reads during your vacation.
Ms. Geltch's Summer Reading Recommedations 2017 Have you thought about your plans for spring break? Consider reading a book. I have included information on five gripping possibilities. I also included these in the current CHS March Multimedia Newsletter.
Book cover images from Good Reads As you well aware, technology applications and tools are created at astronomical rates. A few current updates will assist with these changes. Do you want to be able to navigate through the newly designed Colton High School website? Click on CHS tab on the top of the page. Teachers, do you need new ideas for implementing Common CORE. Look at the new Common CORE/NGSS links below the Common CORE portion of this page.
"Fake news" has become the buzz word following the results of the 2016 U.S Presidential Election. It's clear many of us were manipulated by articles on the internet. I created a Padlet with a few websites for addressing this issue at home, work, and school.
How to spot fake news I read a few highly engaging books over the winter holiday. Take a look at some of these posts at the "Books" section.
Image located at cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2014/12/01/10/24/books-552572_960_720.jpg CHS students selected Rick Yancey's The five wave for the 2016 Yellowjacket Book of the Year. The last star, the third book in the series, received the literary acclaim for the year. Like all other nominated books from a series, I placed the first one up for nomination to give students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the seires.
After reviewing Dec library book survey results, The fifth wave, along with the Infinite sea, the second book in the series will be the January 2017 Books of the Month. Information on obtaining these books and participating in the discussion thread will be posted in the CHS student bulletin and library circulation desk. Image located at www.goodreads.com/book/photo/16101128-the-5th-wave Before I placed these titles on a nominating lists, the works had to meet at least two of the following criteria. This open the possibility for popular as well as award winning literature to be placed on the list.
*Amazon Best YA Books 2016 So Far *American Library Association Top Ten YA Books *Barnes & Noble Best YA Books 2016 So Far *Goodreads Reader's Choice Awards (100,000 votes in nomination process -books chosen before the onsite nomination announcement) *National Book Award Distinction *Printz Award *YALSA Teen Top Ten *Other YA website recognition I included the first book of the series-even though a later one met the requirements. These were Court of thorns and roses, The fifth wave, The Raven boys, Six of Crows, Winner's curse, and The wrath of dawn. When making this decision, I determined students would have the opportunity to read the first book before the final vote. In the first round through Thursday November 10, 2016, students will receive a ballot for choosing their top five selections. I will play trailers for each of the 16 works during lunch and after school in the library. Click on the following link for viewing these clippings gelyalit.weebly.com/best-ya-books-2016.html. I will decide on the number of necessary additional rounds for determing the winner based on the preliminary vote. Mr. Calderon and I will purchase the winning books for the library collection. Pay attention to upcoming posts for the final five finalists and the winner! Image Canva CHS Yellowjacket Book of the Year 2016 Display
As I was locating Pins on Pinterest this morning, I found this incredible site. This will be very helpful for our Seniors as they attend college next year. In reality, many will help all students and staff. Take a look 50 Insanely Useful websites
Mr. Calderon and I strive on making the Colton High School Library an even better place for life long learning and literacy. First, consider joining the Colton High Teen Advisory Group starting next semester. This will help provide input for book purchases and library programming. Regardless of your interest in Teen Advisory, please complete the following survey. CHS Library Teen Advisory Survey 2016-17 School Year. More responses = Better service!

The criteria for using CC Music follows along the same lines as images. Take a look at Melanie Mason's "Using Creative Commons Licensed Music" You Tube screencast.
The Colton High School Writing Center recently opened its doors to assist the overwhelming majority of us who need help with our writing. Take a look at Yellowjacket Writing Center for additional information on services available for students and staff. The link is also available on every Colton High Haiku page. I also included the College Prep resources on the drop down menu on the "College" page on the After High School website. I added CHS Writing Center College Prep here as well.
